Dinner Key and the Seaplane Legacy

Coconut Grove sits on the water that launched commercial aviation. Dinner Key was the departure point for Pan American World Airways seaplane routes across the Caribbean and Latin America in the 1930s. Today, the same basin that floated Clippers serves as one of the largest marinas on the eastern seaboard. Departing from the Grove means stepping into a waterfront with serious history beneath it.

Unlike departures further north that thread through narrow channels and bridge openings, Coconut Grove faces the widest section of lower Biscayne Bay. Vessels clear the basin and reach calm cruising water within minutes. The southern approach also means scenic routes past the flats below Key Biscayne and Stiltsville without being caught up in downtown boat traffic or bridge openings.

Founded in 1873, Coconut Grove is the oldest continuously inhabited neighborhood in Miami Dade County. Banyan trees canopy the streets, Peacock Park stretches along the shoreline, and the village center still feels more like a coastal town than a city district. Morning departures from the Grove carry that energy, unhurried, shaded, and close to the water before you even step aboard.
Stiltsville and the Southern Flats

South of the Grove, the bay shallows into a mile wide flat that stretches toward the Cape Florida Channel. Stiltsville, a cluster of wood frame houses perched on pilings a mile offshore, has stood since the 1930s and remains one of the most photographed landmarks in Biscayne Bay. Charters departing from Coconut Grove pass through Stiltsville in roughly 20 minutes, making it a memorable highlight on any afternoon or sunset route.
We departed from Coconut Grove on a Saturday morning and had the entire southern bay to ourselves. Passed Stiltsville, anchored near the sandbar, and were back before lunch. There is something about leaving from the Grove that feels less like a production and more like stepping onto your own boat.
Coconut Grove was incorporated as a municipality in 1919 and annexed by the City of Miami in 1925. Its waterfront basin at Dinner Key served as a naval air station during World War I before becoming the main terminal for Pan American Airways international seaplane service. The former terminal building now serves as Miami City Hall, one of the few city halls in the country located directly on the water.
